Frequently Asked Questions: Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate Day Trip

How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert?

The distance from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga is approximately 560 kilometers (350 miles). Because this is a long journey, the 3-day tour breaks the drive up into manageable and highly scenic segments. Day 1 takes you over the High Atlas Mountains to the Dades Valley. Day 2 takes you to the Merzouga Sahara. Please note that Day 3 involves the longest stretch of driving (around 9 to 10 hours) to return directly to Marrakech.

What are the main sights we will see on this 3-day Sahara tour?

This comprehensive itinerary is packed with Morocco's most famous landmarks. You will cross the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass, explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou (famous for Gladiator and Game of Thrones), pass through the Valley of the Roses, walk through the towering Todra Gorges, and finally experience the golden Erg Chebbi sand dunes of Merzouga.

What happens to my large luggage during the camel trek?

You do not need to take your heavy suitcases on the camel! When we arrive at the edge of the desert in Merzouga, your large luggage will be safely locked inside the Provan Transport vehicle (or kept securely at a local desert lodge). You will only need to pack a small overnight backpack with your essentials (pajamas, toothbrush, camera, and a change of clothes) for your night at the desert camp.

What is the difference between the Standard and Luxury desert camps?

We offer options to suit different budgets. The Standard Camp features comfortable private tents, but the bathroom and shower facilities are shared in a separate block. Upgrading to the Luxury Desert Camp provides a larger, beautifully decorated tent that includes a private, en-suite bathroom with a hot shower and a flushing toilet right inside your tent, offering a premium Sahara experience.

How long is the camel ride, and is there an alternative to riding a camel?

The camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, perfectly timed so you can watch the spectacular desert sunset from the top of the dunes. If you prefer not to ride a camel for health or personal reasons, please let your Provan Transport driver know in advance. We can easily arrange for a 4x4 vehicle to transfer you directly to the desert camp at no extra stress!

What should I pack and wear for the 3-day Merzouga desert tour?

Comfort is key for the driving days, so wear loose, breathable clothing. For the camel ride, we highly recommend long pants to prevent chafing, closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen. It is also a great idea to bring a traditional scarf (Cheche) to protect your face and camera from blowing sand.

Will it be cold at night in the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert has extreme temperature fluctuations. During the day, it can be very hot, but temperatures drop significantly after the sun goes down. If you are traveling between November and March, the nights are very cold, so you must pack a warm jacket, fleece, and warm socks. Even in the summer, we recommend bringing a light sweater for the evening under the stars.

Are there charging outlets and Wi-Fi at the Merzouga desert camp?

In our Luxury camps, the tents are equipped with solar-powered electrical outlets so you can charge your phone and camera batteries. Standard camps usually have charging stations in the main dining tent. While some camps offer basic Wi-Fi, the connection deep in the dunes is often very weak or non-existent—making it the perfect opportunity to unplug and enjoy the starry night sky!

Is this 3-day desert tour suitable for young children?

While children are welcome, parents should be aware that this tour involves extensive time in the car, particularly on the third day (up to 10 hours of driving). For families with young children or toddlers, we highly recommend booking a Private Tour so you can stop whenever the kids need a break, or considering our shorter Agafay Desert excursion closer to Marrakech.

How do I book this tour, and what is your cancellation policy?

Because the 3-Day Merzouga tour includes hotel and desert camp reservations, we strongly advise booking at least a few weeks in advance to secure the best accommodations. Provan Transport offers a flexible booking policy: reserve your tour online now, pay later, and enjoy free cancellation up to 24 hours before your departure date.
